Senator Shaheen spoke at a press conference to affirm her support for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and urge the House of Representatives to pass the bipartisan, Senate-passed version of the bill. Shaheen said the House version of the bill strips critical provisions for victims of domestic abuse, specifically for victims on college campuses. The House bill also weakens protections for victims in same-sex relationships, immigrant victims and women on tribal lands. New Hampshire already has the highest average student debt in the nation at $31408 per student. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) took to the Senate floor today to fight for extensions to a pair of critical small business programs as part of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, which is currently under debate in the Senate. Shaheen called for reauthorizations to both the Export-Import Bank, which helps small businesses sell their products overseas, and the Small Business Administration's 504 refinancing program, which helps small firms refinance their real estate loans. Both programs are funded at no cost to taxpayers.
