Alexander questions Sec. of Interior Nominee about protecting Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Lamar Alexander's Senate Member Office (R-TN) posted a Video on March 7, 2013 | 3:40 pm - Original Item - Comments (View)
In an Energy Committee hearing today, Sen. Alexander questioned Secretary of the Interior Nominee, Sally Jewell, on her approach to funding formulas for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, saying, "Would you be willing to work with me to review the funding formula that the parks have? More than 9 million Americans visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park every year... would it seem reasonable to you that it might be that a park that has twice as many visitors as any other park would have a federal appropriation that would be at least the same as other important national parks? The people of Tennessee and North Carolina gave the Great Smokies to the federal government. As a result of that, there is a law that says there can be no fee. Not only do we get less money than the national parks in the west by federal appropriation, we don't get the extra fee money. So, we have a remarkable amount of volunteer activity there."

Alexander on Fox News: President 'Blaming Other People for Problems He Has Caused'

Lamar Alexander's Senate Member Office (R-TN) posted a Video on March 3, 2013 | 1:51 pm - Original Item - Comments (View)
On Fox News' "America's News HQ" with Shannon Bream today, US Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said the sequester demonstrates a "colossal failure of presidential leadership" and called on President Obama to send to Congress a plan to replace the automatic cuts, and to address what Alexander called out-of-control entitlement spending. "The problem is the president has profited politically, so far, for blaming other people for problems he has caused," Alexander said. "But I predict that won't last forever. Colossal failures of presidential leadership will be a blot on his legacy."

Alexander, McConnell, Corker, Paul Introduce Legislation to Stop Fishing Restrictions on Tailwaters

Lamar Alexander's Senate Member Office (R-TN) posted a Video on February 28, 2013 | 5:55 pm - Original Item - Comments (View)
On the floor of the United States Senate, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today introduced, along with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senators Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), legislation that would prevent the Corps from enacting its plan, rather than simply delay it, as previously intended, because of the Corps' continued commitment to move forward. Alexander said the Corps is pushing an "unreasonable plan to restrict fishing below Cumberland River dams that will destroy remarkably good recreational opportunities and many jobs." Alexander continued, "Water spills through the Cumberland River dams less than 20 percent of the time on average. To close off the tailwaters to fishing 100 percent of the time would be like keeping the gate down at the railroad crossing 100 percent of the time: The track isn't dangerous when the train isn't coming, and the tailwaters aren't dangerous when the water isn't spilling through the dam."
